Every Taxpayer Has Power to Advance Liberty

It is important that we reassess how our personal giving and tax dollars are being used.  Of utmost importance, we need to oppose the funding of higher or lower public schools that place in question the primacy of the traditional family, morality and citizen self-reliance.  The following letter is an example of sorely needed citizen influence.

Dear County Treasurer:

We are paying the education tax called for by the billing from your office.  This is, of course, an important citizen duty.  We respectfully urge that legislators change the tax law so collections for school tuition would be routed to parents or guardians.  They can then exercise their right to choose a school, be it public or private, that best represents and teaches their values.  There are many ways to administer this, including the very effective tuition program known as the G.I. Bill.  We agree with parents and many teachers who object to any curriculum forced upon students that places the composition of the family in question and presents revisionist morality as an acceptable lifestyle.

Thank you for your work as County Treasurer.

(Signed)_____________________________________________________________

Ronald Reagan is quoted as saying, "Education is not the means of showing people how to get what they want.  Education is an exercise by means of which enough men, it is hoped, will learn to want what is worth having."*

Every Citizen Has Power to Advance Liberty in November

Support legislative candidates who recognize the benefit of routing taxpayer revenues for education directly to parents or other guardians.  They may then choose homeschool, private school or a charter school that reflects their values.  Texas legislators are now even backing "charter colleges."  They could be "core curriculum charters" that would offer "great books seminars," including courses on Bible, Renaissance, Reformation and, of course, American values resident in the Declaration of Independence.  Charter colleges would receive per-student funding as charter K-12 do now.*

Elect people to serve on school boards who will insist that the unique and specific American principles for government be taught.  In 1877, the United States government printing office published The Organic Laws of the United States of America.  Ben Poole, who was then clerk of printing records, compiled the documentation under an order by the U.S. Senate.  The Organic Laws of the United States of America lists the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, Northwest Ordinance and the Constitution on the United States.  Share this study with your school board.

Support candidates at federal and state levels who agree to work for the appointment of judges who respect the original meaning of the Constitution.  "Judge Robert H. Bork describes the enormous damage that activist judges have inflicted on America in his book, Coercing Virtue: The Worldwide Rule of Judges.  The courts are often dominated by faux intellectuals of the Left who, unable to persuade the people or the legislators, 'avoid the verdict of the ballot box' by engaging in 'politics masquerading as law.'  We are 'increasingly governed not by law or elected representatives, but by unelected, unrepresentative, unaccountable committees of lawyers applying no law other than their own will.'"**

Work for and elect senators and representatives to the U.S. Congress who will reassert their duty to represent the people and restore the Constitutional provisions for restricting the role of federal judges.  The Constitution is a rule of law document, not a rule by unelected judges.  In terms of how authority manifests itself over time, the two contrasts represent the distinction between representative government of, by and for the people and the tyranny of authoritarianism.  In terms of philosophy, the two represent the distinction between the Creator-based Declaration of Independence and the evils of old European secular philosophy.  When the traditional American sovereignty of man under God over government was adopted on July 4, 1776, it reversed the historical inevitability of authoritarian carnage.

"Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress.  If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption.  If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature… If the next centennial does not find us a great nation… it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces."***

The Prescription For Citizen Paralysis: Knowledge and Action

Liberty with prosperity came to America because the Founding Fathers had it right.  They took self and all pretender gods off the throne, and they placed the King of Kings, the impartial, nonsectarian God of life and creation's nature, on the throne.

"Our fathers have earned and bought it for us, at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasure, and their blood.  And liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right, from the frame of their nature, to knowledge, as their great Creator, who does nothing in vain, has given them understandings, and a desire to know; but besides this, they have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge, I mean, of the characters and conduct of their rulers.  Rulers are no more than attorneys, agents, and trustees for the people; and if the cause, the interest and trust, is insidiously betrayed, or wantonly trifled away, the people have a right to revoke the authority. And the preservation of the means of knowledge among the lowest ranks, is of more importance to the public than all the property of all the rich men in the country" (John Adams, Vice-President under George Washington, and second president of the United States, A Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law, 1766 from The Works of John Adams, …by his grandson, Charles F. Adams, Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 10 volumes).

Parents, guardians and grandparents who can afford it should support the enrollment of their children in God-honoring private schools or, if able, homeschool them.  This is the most powerful political statement that Americans can make.  That is the vanguard for a nationwide competitive school system enabling citizen choice.

Promote the election of candidates for public office who unabashedly oppose government tolerance for teacher union tenure laws.  Good teachers have always had tenure by virtue of the quality of their work alone.

Teachers do have rights, but ultimately they answer to those who pay their salaries.  Teachers who cannot accept a contract with a school district that requires respect for the family and morality have but one alternative, which is to establish, fund, and teach in their own private schools.

"Because of the obvious potential for abuse even labor union advocates like AFL-CIO President George Meany and Franklin D. Roosevelt viewed unionization of the public employees as unthinkable.*

When tenure establishment privileges for government teachers are prohibited, good teachers can again safely support the traditional family and historic American principles without having their patriotism dirtied by secular gossips.

"We've been blessed with the opportunity to stand for something--for liberty and freedom and fairness.  And these are things worth fighting for, worth devoting our lives to.  And we have good reason to be hopeful and optimistic… so, let us go forth with good cheer and stout hearts--happy warriors out to seize back a country and a world to freedom."**

The Healing of Citizen Paralysis

Restoring educational traditions central to American greatness provides the sure basis for strong families, prosperity and limited government for, by and of the people.  Many people are in the dark about the God-rejecting worldview now being imposed upon captive student classrooms and as a result, they do not join in opposition.

We must broadcast anew and persist in upholding the First Principle, that it is creation's God Who is man's Benefactor.  This is the basic principle upon which all other worthy principles follow.  When the First Principle is not publicly upheld by educators (for students to learn), the standards of righteousness that are central to liberty and American greatness soon become fodder for distortion by atheistic secular militants.

When we as a people championed the spirit of the First Principle, creation's God Who is man's Benefactor, the meaning of the Declaration of Independence was clear and the war of King George III and his army against Americans failed.

Our duty now is to be very public about the fact that reliable standards for law come with knowledge of the nonsectarian Creator-based meaning of the Declaration of Independence and the First Amendment.  In 1835, the significance of this connection was observed by the French lawyer, Alexis de Tocqueville, "… in America, religion is the road to knowledge and the observance of the divine laws leads man to civil freedom…"

The rudeness and even hatred exhibited by secular pathfinders when confronted with American principles gives politics a bad name.  They cannot tell the truth and sell their leftist agenda.  This gives us a comparative advantage.  Political involvement and persistence in broadcasting American values is a noble and necessary calling for every freedom-loving American.

In the American system of representative government, education central to American greatness will be restored if the people know how it has been altered.  That is the purpose of Restoring Education Central to American Greatness.  I accept no personal remuneration for writing or serving as President of the Heartland Foundation, Inc.  If you have received important insights from this blog, purchase the book, Restoring Education Central to American Greatness, and share it with people you know.  The documentation has been put in book form so that readers such as you can put it into the hands of as many people as possible.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing" (The Works of Edmund Burke in Nine Volumes, Vol. IX… 172).

Prayer, humility and recommitment must be undertaken.  The selfless dedication that made the American Revolution possible is seen in the Great Awakening of 1740 through 1780.  God has provided this specific promise:  "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:14).

"As the safety and prosperity of nations ultimately and essentially depend on the protection and the blessing of Almighty God, and the national acknowledgement of this truth is not only an indispensable duty which the people owe to Him, but a duty whose natural influence is favorable to the promotion of that morality and piety without which social happiness cannot exist nor the blessings of a free government be enjoyed."*

The Prognosis of Citizen Paralysis

Our duty as Americans is clear.  Defending what is right is a cost of freedom that must be paid.  It is the all-important principles advanced in the God-honoring Declaration that provide the moral predicate essential to restrain the use of oppressive government.  Had leaders and educators failed to convey with boldness the God-honoring principles from the beginning, America would be just another of the hapless nations that has flitted in and then out of history.

Under the providence of God, we have pushed back the frontiers of tyranny and evil time and again.  America has freed more human beings from the clutches of evil than any nation on earth and we are a relatively young country.  Even though continental Europe, in its posture of pseudo-sophistication, might consider us the country cousin in the family of nations, when those same Europeans needed to be rescued--often from themselves.  We were there to rescue them.  We have done it many times and in many ways around the world.  At enormous cost to ourselves, we have gone into and out of dozens of nations in order to make the world a better place--even those nations that were our deadliest enemies, like Germany and Japan after World War II.  What MacArthur did in Japan, and what the Marshall Plan accomplished in Europe, are without historical equal and they indicate what we believe is our high calling on the planet (Dr. Jack Wheeler, The Ugly Liberal American, page 4, quoted by The Schwarz Report, May 2008, Volume 48, number 5).

Ernest Renan, the agnostic, warned his friends that were promoting a socialist utopia:  "Let us enjoy the liberty of the sons of God, but let us take care lest we become accomplices in the diminution of virtue which would menace society if Christianity were to grow weak.  What should we do without it?  If Rationalism wishes to govern the world without regard to the religious needs of the soul, the experience of the French Revolution is there to teach us the consequences of such a blunder."*

Rabbi Daniel Lapin is quoted as saying, "Without a vibrant and vital Christianity, America is doomed, and without America, the west is doomed.  Which is why I, an Orthodox Jewish rabbi, devoted to Jewish survival, the Torah, and Israel am so terrified of American Christianity caving in."**

Appeasement will not work.  There is no valid reason for the complaint of leftists that conservatives are one-sided and unreasonable in support of their basic principles.  Secular militants do not compromise their atheistic dogma.  The hope that they will change is foolish.  To be at peace with their belief in atheistic exclusivity, they must have control over and displace those who project higher standards.  The struggle between the forces of liberty and those who want an atheistic-secular world is a war of wills.  If we win, they will still be free to fund and promote their own schools.  If they win, we will be slaves to Godless authoritarian rule.

The Foundational Malady Diagnosed

When we observe secular militants without knowing their intentions, we arrive at faulty conclusions.  Their determination is rooted in the fact that morality, the traditional family, and belief in God firmly undermine the power of hierarchical authoritarians.  For them, deception in pursuit of their atheistic world is a virtue.

Robert Chandler writes about David Horowitz' testimony before the Kansas House of Representatives regarding "academic freedom."  Horowitz said:  "Entire academic departments and fields are no longer devoted to scholarly pursuits, but have become ideological training and recruitment centers for radical causes."  The departments most suspect are economics, health, history, English, political science, sociology, psychology and anthropology. Add to these departments women's studies, queer studies, black liberation studies, Islamic studies, third-world studies, global warming studies, and so on--you get the picture (Robert Chandler, PhD, with experience in the Department of Defense, State, and the Central Intelligence Agency, Shadow World, One Massachusetts Ave., N.W. Washington, D.C., Regnery Publishing, 2008).

David Horowitz writes later in his book Radical Son, "The Marxists and socialists who had been refuted by historical events are now the tenured establishment of the academic world.  Marxism had produced the bloodiest and most oppressive regimes in human history" (New York:  Free Press, 1997).  Citations are from the September 2010 Journal by Dr. David A. Noebel, published by Summit Ministries, Manitou Springs, CO.

By far the greatest peril to America today is internal.  It is the secular militants' war against traditional American values. This started when taxpayer-funded universities foolishly caved in to the demand for the old European secular policy of unionization and teachers' independence (tenure guarantees).  Now contemporary liberals gleefully impose their God-rejecting approach to life upon the minds of American youth even in lower-level public schools.

Abraham Lincoln understood that it was the dangers from within America, not from the outside, that could destroy America.  He stated:  "What constitutes the bulwark of our own liberty and independence?  It is not our frowning battlements, our bristling seacoasts, the guns of our war steamers, or the strength of our gallant and disciplined army.  Our defense is in the preservation of the spirit that prizes liberty as the heritage of all men, in all lands, everywhere.  Destroy this spirit, and you have planted the seeds of despotism around your own doors."*

Ronald Reagan contributes more insight to this grave topic in remarks at a Dallas Ecumenical Prayer Breakfast, delivered on August 23, 1984 in Dallas, Texas:  "Without God, there is no virtue, because there's no prompting of the conscience.  Without God, we're mired in the material, the world that tells us only what the senses perceive… And without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure.  If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under."**

Outcome-Based Education That Is Profoundly American

Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, the second president of the United States, wrote to her young son, John Quincy, who would later become our sixth president:  "Great learning and superior abilities, should you ever possess them, will be of little value and small estimation, unless virtue, honor, truth, and integrity are added to them.  Adhere to those religious sentiments and principles that were early installed into your mind and remember that you are accountable to your Maker for all your words and actions.  Let me enjoin it upon you to attend constantly and steadfastly to the precepts and instructions of your father, as you value the happiness of your mother and your own welfare. His care and attention to you render many things unnecessary for me to write which I might otherwise do, but the inadvertency and heedlessness of youth, requires line upon line and precept upon precept, and when enforced by the joint efforts of both parents will, I hope, have a due influence upon your conduct; for dear as you are to me, I would much rather you should have found your grave in the ocean you have crossed, or that an untimely death crop you in your infant years, than see you an immoral, profligate, or graceless child.*

Children are not the property of the government or the state.  The authority and responsibility for what children are taught rests with parents.

A Well-Educated Student:

Speaks and writes accurately.

Listens attentively.

Is a reader.

Is honest at all times.

Is a person of prayer.

Has God-honoring goals.

Upholds the traditional family.

Is sensitive to the Word and to the will of God.

Is sensitive to the needs of others.

Handles success and defeat with grace.

Has convictions and stands for them.

Fulfills citizen duties to family, church and country.

Is polite in his dealings with others.

Uses resources responsibly.

Recognizes the existence of absolute truth which never changes and, applied,

serves as a very sure means for personal development and success.

Uses gentle yet persuasive words, not physical force, to communicate his position.

Woodrow Wilson, in his election campaign for President, stated "A nation which does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do.  We are trying to do a futile thing if we do not know where we came from or what we have been about…  America was born a Christian nation.  America was born to exemplify that devotion to the tenets of righteousness which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scripture."**

Education That Is Profoundly American

Sound education rests on respect for the First Principle, namely, the God of Creation is man's benefactor.  Increases in knowledge are made possible by the connecting links of intelligible design. Irrefutable third-grade math, for instance, is a link to the latest reliable advances in the physical sciences.

John Jay is thought to be one of the most influential among the Founding Fathers.  He served as president of the first Continental Congress and was the first chief justice of the United States.  When Jay applied for admission to King's College in New York at the age of fourteen, one of the requirements he had to fulfill was to translate the first ten chapters of the Gospel of John from Greek into Latin.*

The Founding Fathers recognized that the preservation of the family, self-government, and liberty depends upon applying the timeless and universal principles found in the Bible.  And for Americans to have firsthand knowledge of the Bible, they must be taught to read.  Public school textbooks taught the alphabet through Bible verses that started with each letter.

Gouverneur Morris of Pennsylvania, Founding Father and a Signer who arranged  the final draft of the Constitution, wrote "Religion is the only solid basis for good morals; therefore education should teach the precepts of religion and the duties of man toward God" (The Life of Governeur Morris, Jared Sparks, Boston: Gray and Bowen, 1832, Vol. III, p 483, from his "Notes on the Form of a Constitution for France"). **

Immigrants from diverse backgrounds came to America and worked peacefully together because they shared a common mind on the issue of human equality, moral law and responsible citizenship.  They wanted no more potentates, or authoritarian clergy, professors or kings.  The Constitution clarified the point, when forbidding titles "of nobility," that could undermine the sovereign authority of the people under God over government (Section 9, article 8).

"O Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto:  'In God is our trust.'  And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!" (From The Star-Spangled Banner).***

Let's Compare, Shall We?

Monopoly Money

Much maligned by leftists, there are several studies that document the way that radicals bully their way into control of the social, political and religious atmosphere on school campuses (even several seminaries).  Three excellent books on the subject are Masters of Deceit by J. Edgar Hoover, Chronology of Education with Quotable Quotes by D.L. Cuddy, and You Can Still Trust the Communists… to Be Communists (Socialists and Progressives Too) by Fred C. Schwarz and David A. Noebel.*

According to the Wall Street Journal, January 3, 2006, the NEA and their unions spent approximately $80.5 million in the 2004-05 school year.  "The NEA gave $65 million of its members' dues to liberal groups last year."  Undoubtedly the biggest benefactors, legislative candidates who were willing to promote NEA union power, received over $40 million of those funds.  In the 2007-08 year, the NEA national headquarters took in $337.7 million in dues and agency fees.**

Myron Lieberman, an educational consultant who recently served as a visiting scholar at Bowling Green University, has emerged as a leading education free-market analyst.  He estimates that "the collective bargaining process itself imposes direct and indirect costs that may run into the billions of dollars."  According to his book Public Education: An Autopsy, "As long as schools remain a government monopoly, cost and quality will be as bad as cost and quality everywhere under socialism."***  Lieberman is also the author of The Teachers' Unions: How the NEA and AFT Sabotage Reform and Hold Students, Parents, Teachers, and Taxpayers Hostage to Bureaucracy.

The dogmatic secular brand of academic freedom and old European atheistic-secular philosophy go hand in hand.  It was the collective capacity of unions to raise and distribute money to like-minded organizations that was infamously used by the Fascists to corrupt the political process in Italy prior to World War II.

As the education in a nation goes, so goes the nation.

Bullies

*J. Edgar Hoover, author of Masters of Deceit, served as director of the FBI for forty years.  It was published by Kessinger Publishing, LLC in 1958.  D.L. Cuddy, PhD, author of Chronology of Education with Quotable Quotes, served as a senior assistant in the U. S. Department of Education (1982-88).  His book was published by the Pro-Family Forum (5th edition, 1998), available Radio Liberty, Soquel, California.  The book documents the strategy of leftists in public education by using statements from their own publications.  The following example is a quote from a cosigner of the first Humanist Manifesto, published in 1933.  He called for the "synthesizing of all religions" into "a socialized and cooperative economic order."  Fred C. Schwarz and David A. Noebel, authors of You Can Still Trust the Communists… to Be Communists (Socialists and Progressives Too) were published in 2010 by Christian Anti-Communism Crusade.
